East Hampton and Southampton were the first local municipalities in the state of New York to formally oppose of offshore oil and seismic airgun blasting on the Atlantic Coast.
A grassroots effort to oppose offshore drilling aims to join together local municipalities along the East Coast who understand the urgency to protect the Atlantic coastline from offshore oil exploration and development. Currently, there are just over 130 on the list.
Coastal communities bordering the US depend on clean water and healthy ocean ecosystems. We are aware that climate change and its perpetuater, offshore drilling, pose an imminent threat to our coastlines, shrinking our beaches. We muse rise to realize that drilling is not the answer to our energy needs. It is time to decentralize our energy dependency and invest in reliable and responsible energy technology alternatives, like offshore wind.

Thank you so much to our local governments for promptly responding to our request, and for paving the way for the rest of New York State by stepping up to protect 100% of the Atlantic coastline from offshore drilling and oil exploration.
And our last thanks go to Scott Bluedorn, a local surfer, artist and one of our core volunteers, for stepping up to represent Surfrider at the 8.17 East Hampton town meeting. This is what Surfrider is all about.
