The Eastern Long Island Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation will hold our Third Annual New York State Scholastic Surfing Games. The contest will be held on May 30, 2009 at 9:00 AM at Ditch Plains Beach, Montauk NY. In the event there is no surf that day, the contest will be postponed to May 31.
We have secured a permit to hold this special event issued by the Town of East Hampton, and insurance from the Surfrider Foundation National office in San Clemente, CA. In addition, we have arranged for lifeguard coverage to be provided by certified lifeguards. Our chapter will provide all resources necessary to conduct this event.
SPONSORS
Thanks to sponsors Ditch Ink, The Ditch Witch, and Global Surf Industries (GSI).
PARTICIPATION
Schools from around the Long Island region are invited to participate. The event is designed to foster surfing as a school team sport and encourage the growth of surf clubs and surf teams. Participation by middle and high schools on Long Island (especially those with surf clubs) will also help to gain support by the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA). The NSSA is a national organization with a twenty year history of organizing competitive surfing events for schools. To date, despite the popularity of surfing on Long Island, there has never been an NSSA event.
TO PARTICIPATE
We encourage surfers of all skill levels to participate (participants must minimally be able to paddle out and into a wave under their own power and be able to swim). You must be affiliated with a school, and participate as a surf club or team. Each team must have at least 4 and no more than 7 students. (Clubs can enter up to two teams each) Each team must have an adult advisor present on Saturday June 9th (or Sunday June 10th).
