Surfrider Foundation’s mission is the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. The Eastern Long Island Chapter has been a strong advocate of public access and environmental preservation along our shoreline from Montauk Point to Moriches Inlet for over 12 years. Staffed entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers, the grass roots chapter has worked, and continues to work, with every level of government on resolving many important coastal issues. In addition, dozens of beach cleanups, educational programs, and dune plantings have been done with local students and community members.

This year’s Surf Movie Night feature is Jack McCoy’s award winning A Deeper Shade Of Blue. The Greatest Surfing Story Ever Told. This is a film about surfing’s deepest roots: in the subconscious; in ancient lore; in the craft of surfboard building; in mans perpetual quest for a joyful relationship with the natural world. The New York Times calls the footage “stunning,” with “never before seen angles” (Variety) with “jaw dropping action” (Maui News).

For over 30 years Jack McCoy has been filming some of the world's best surfers in some of the world's surf in known and exotic locations. He has made making films and shooting the surf his life's work. Jack has over 24 feature and short award winning films to his credit on the sport of surfing including Free As A Dog, Blue Horizon, Sabotaj, Occy The Occumentary, and many others.

Surf Movie Night was started by Michael Halsband in 2003 and featured his internationally award-winning "Surf Movie Reels 1-14".

BLUE WATER TASK FORCE WATER QUALITY MONITORING PROGRAM

Our new Blue Water Task Force water quality-monitoring program, done in conjunction with the Concerned Citizens of Montauk, is our first program of this kind, and will be supported by proceeds from Surf Movie Night 10.

This collaborative water-testing program began in June 2013, and is run entirely by trained, local volunteers. Water samples are collected weekly and following major rain events from sites along Ditch Plain Beach and from Lake Montauk near South Lake Beach. Water samples are processed at a water-testing laboratory located at the CCOM office. Tests are performed to determine bacteria levels in the water using EPA approved methodology that is likewise used by state and county beach programs across the country to manage beaches and to protect public health. Our testing protocols and laboratory operations also benefit from oversight by a professional, trained in water quality testing and evaluation.

Chapter activist Mara Dias noted "The new water testing lab in Montauk is going to be a great community resource, providing valuable information on the cleanliness of our beach water and opportunities for our members to participate in a citizen science program".
Water quality results are available for public view on the Surfrider Foundation’s Blue Water Task Force web site (http://www.surfrider.org/blue-water-task-force/chapter/37 ). A link to the test results is also posted on both CCOM’s (http://www.Preservemontauk.org/ ) and the ELI Chapter’s websites (https://easternli.surfrider.org/programs/ ).

The purpose of this water-testing program is to raise public and governmental awareness of the environmental challenges confronting our community. Recreational activities such as swimming, surfing, and fishing, business interests such as commercial fishing and our tourism industries are all dependent upon clean water and clean beaches. The water quality data generated by this testing program will better inform surfers, swimmers and families of the condition of the water at their favorite beaches. Surfrider and CCOM also hope that by generating more awareness of local water quality issues our community and local governments will play important roles in improving the cleanliness and quality of our environment.
