Stop "Insanity Island" Liquified Natural Gas Facility!

Insanity Island Flyer

Insanity Island Flyer

"Insanity Island" is the nickname given to the proposed man made island that would house a Liquid Natural Gas port just 13 miles from the coast of New York.  There are MANY detriments to this plan, which would place the island on top of seafloor and reef that are home to endangered species.

Surfrider is actively working to stop this plan, which has been deemed unnecessary and contrary to the health of our oceans, energy independence, and even safety.

There will be two public hearings, one in New York and one in New Jersey.  We STRONGLY urge you to attend!!

MOST IMPORTANT:
1. January 29th -- Coast Guard Led Public Hearing on the LNG Port Application at the Long Beach Public Library from 6-8 PM -- This is the most important event we have, as it will set the tone and momentum for the entire campaign.

The venue is easily accessible by car or from New York's Penn Station via the LIRR. Note that the library is approximately 100 yards and in plain sight of the Long Beach train station, that on-street parking is available, and that it is surrounded by a plethora of restaurants. Please make a commitment to attend.
_________
Some PRIOR Events (Earlier Than The Hearing):

2. Thursday, January 22nd ---- Endless Summer Screening and Anti-LNG Talk -- 8-10 PM at 92YTribeca Theater, 200 Hudson Street, New York, NY 10013, (Ph# 212-413-8834). After a big screen showing of the iconic Bruce Brown film that started it all, NYC-Chapter Treasurer Adam Wiener will lead and participate in an LNG discussion with Dave Byer of Clean Ocean Action, and John Malizia, President of the Staten Island Tuna Club. Our chapter will be soliciting petition signatures, distributing LNG literature, and raising funds through T-Shirt and chocolate sales. Come on out, it's a fun way to help raise both money and conciousness!

3. Friday January 23rd ---- Anti-LNG Fundraiser at the TIKI BAR in Long Beach, New York (832 West Beech Street) -- Hosted by our allies at the Central Long Island Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. Live music by "The Sun Gets Down", great raffle prizes, $5 admission. Easily accessible by car or LIRR. Don't miss the fun or the opportunity to support the fight against Big Energy's LNG plans.

From Chris Wade, Chair of the New York City Surfrider Chapter:

I am writing to request your attendance at an URGENT COAST GUARD HEARING in Long Beach, New York at 6 PM on Thursday, January 29th. I know that not everyone can make regular meetings or even attend our special events. But there are more than eleven hundred of you on this list and I would like every one of you to attend at least one of three critical events this month. But first let me explain the urgency.

As you know, the chapter has been working for several years to block development of three Liquid Natural Gas projects that 'Big Energy' wants to drop on our coast. That fight has come to head this month with the Coast Guard's announcement of a public hearing on Long Island, Thursday January 29th.

The meeting will discuss the misleadingly named 'Safe Harbor Energy' License Application. It is the first and most important of three public comment opportunities New Yorkers will have to register their complaints about this environmentally catastrophic project and will set the tone for the rest of the campaign. It is critical that we produce a massive public wave of opposition at this first meeting. We need that massive turnout to build our anti-LNG momentum with the broader public, in the press and with our elected officials.

If you are our supporter, if you are "dedicated to protecting our oceans, beaches and waves," I know you'll clear your calendar to help us, especially by making the trip to attend a critical public hearing on the evening of the 29th.

You can learn more about our opposition to LNG and LNG port facilities at our web site ( Surfrider Foundation NYC Chapter ), where we have made our anti-LNG flier and other resources available. And, if you want to do more, or if you are absolutely unable to attend on the 29th, I hope you'll come to one or both of this month's other anti-LNG events.

Thank you in advance for your support. With your commitment, I know we can stop 'Big Energy' and protect our coast!

Regards,
Chris Wade
Chair, NYC-Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation
