Supported the South Fork Wind Project

Supported construction of the South Fork Wind Project

The Eastern Long Island Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation supported the South Fork Wind Project and urged BOEM to grant the final approvals for the project, coupled with the highest possible levels of mitigation to protect environmental resources and sustainable recreational uses. See our blog about this victory.

The ELI Chapter stayed neutral on this project until the release of an environmental impact analysis through the National Environmental Policy Act. They wanted to make sure that the project met a high bar for environmental and recreational protection before they could support it.

While the Chapter stayed neutral, they attempted to spread as much unbiased information about the project as they could over the last few years, hosting two public webinars (recording here (password: Pc2MTZf!), a public meeting with Orsted as a speaker, and ex Chair Andy Brosnan participated on a panel at the East Hampton library.

Surfrider strives to support renewable energy projects, as a way to reduce the negative impacts from climate change. Read our policy on Renewable Ocean Energy for more details on how we evaluate projects like South Fork Wind.
