In honor of Earth Day, Surfrider will be joining the Concerned Citizens of Montauk and aiding in beach cleanup. Meet at Ditch Plains beach at 9:30am for a beach cleanup. Bags will be provided.
After the cleanup, bring your trash bags to the Montauk movie theater at 12 noon and join us for a free one-hour Earth Day presentation on one of the most important land stewardship programs anywhere on Long Island. Bruce Horwith, PhD, formerly of the Nature Conservancy and past director of the burns program, will talk about the history of fire in the park and why burns are so essential as a management tool for the health of the ecosystem. Hugh McGinness will present amazing photos of the rare, endangered and incredibly beautiful grass land moths that exist nowhere else because of the burns. The Montauk Fire Department will talk about the need for these fires as a training tool for the men and women whose responsibility it is to save our homes and lives should any of the thousands of acres of Montauk's Open space be accidentally set ablaze (Montauk is now 70% parkland). The Montauk Fire Department will also bring along a fire truck for the enjoyment of the kids.
