Once again there is an effort to limit beach access by limiting beach driving in Southampton. The Chapter is closely following the issue and the lawsuits initiated by homeowners against the Southampton Town Trustees. Read more to find out what the chapter is doing and local new links. Two separate lawsuits are working their way through the courts against the Southampton Town Trustees. Homeowners who have brought the suits claim the beach-driving and parking situations in front of their homes are unacceptable and they claim the villages (that are part of Southampton Town) should have control over these decisions, not the Southampton trustees. The Trustee's control over the beaches in all of Southampton is at stake.

The following statement was read at a Southampton Village meeting in June -
The Surfrider Foundation, Eastern Long Island Chapter is a local, grass roots not for profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. The Surfrider Foundation maintains over 250,000 supporters, activists and members worldwide.
The Eastern Long Island chapter is dedicated to maintaining and acquiring beach and ocean access rights, to preserve our coastline and improve the overall quality of Long Island’s coastal environment.
The chapter has been involved in the fight to protect the public’s access to the Picnic Area dating back to the defeat of the Brodsky bill in 2005. We continue to support our members and friends at the Picnic Area.
Beach access is a paramount concern of the Surfrider Foundation. Our organization opposes any action that will limit access to our beaches and privatize this access for the enjoyment of a few. We urge the Village to find a solution that will allow our residents continued enjoyment of the beaches as they have for many years. Once we start to privatize our beaches for the enjoyment of a few, a dangerous precedent is set.
