BLUE WATER TASK FORCE WATER QUALITY MONITORING PROGRAM

Surf Movie Night supports our volunteer-run Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) water testing, education and advocacy program.  Our chapter uses this program to alert citizens and officials in their communities about water quality problems and to work toward solutions. The BWTF has demonstrated success by identifying problems with beach and coastal water pollution, raising public awareness of these incidents and working collaboratively with local stakeholders to find and implement pollution solutions.

The BWTF has also precipitated the establishment of state and local government water quality monitoring programs in many communities and continues to fill in data gaps, improving the public’s knowledge of the safety of their beach water.  BWTF water testing programs measure bacteria levels at both marine and freshwater beaches and compare them to federal water quality standards established by the EPA to protect public health in recreational waters.
The Eastern Long Island Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and the Concerned Citizens of Montauk have joined forces to initiate water quality testing at some of the most popular swimming and surfing beaches on Eastern Long Island.
Chapter activist Mara Dias noted "The water testing lab in Montauk has been and will continue to be a great community resource, providing valuable information on the cleanliness of our beach water and opportunities for our members to participate in a citizen science program".
Water quality results are available for public view on the Surfrider Foundation’s Blue Water Task Force web site ( http://www.surfrider.org/blue-water-task-force/chapter/37 ).  A link to the test results is also posted on both CCOM’s ( http://www.Preservemontauk.org/ ) and the ELI Chapter’s websites ( http://easternli.surfrider.org/programs/ ).
